Items of note

In the time since my last post, a Corey Hart for John Maine rumor has been developed and debunked. Good. I recognize that Maine gets hurt all the time, but I’d take my chances with him over a guy who a) is basically redundant with Jeff Francoeur on the team and b) appears to be getting worse.

Scientists have deciphered monkey language, and just in time to help us follow the Winter Meetings on Twitter.

Here’s what Whitey Herzog looks like now.

I have it on a solid source that at the GM meetings, the NL East clubs decided that this year’s division champion will be determined not by the standings, but by which team hands out the worst multi-year deal to an old catcher. The Nationals’ outlook got a whole lot brighter yesterday.

For no reason at all, here’s Funkadelic:

    • Maggot Brain is up there with my favorite albums ever, and their old stuff is clearly the best. But I do enjoy live P-Funk, even now. I saw them at the Apollo about five years ago, and after four hours and numerous promises that the band would play straight on through to the next night’s show, the venue cut their power. George Clinton (without a microphone) and the drummer kept going for about 15 minutes with the house lights on and stage lights off before finally quitting it. Pretty impressive for an old man.

Also, I was once ushered out of the 9:30 club in DC by Bootsy Collins himself, but that is not a story I should share here.

      • I definitely still think they can bring it live but the music just stopped being consequential by the end of the 70s. Not terribly shocking, I suppose. But, hey, there is a large enough back catalog to keep me happy.

While you don’t have to share your Bootsy story, I will tell you that my friend’s mom got a personal invitation to meet George after a show a few years back (read: a roadie told her that George thought she was hot and he wanted her to join them on the bus to party after the show). She declined.

      • She likes to tell people that it wasn’t because of his intentions; it was because it was 3 a.m. on a weeknight and she had to work in the morning. Fair enough, I suppose.

  1. I happen to like Maine too, but in terms of just a straight player comparison of Maine/Hart in a trade, doesn’t Maine appear to be getting worse as well?

If you really look at it from a neutral persepctive, these guy are basically the same player, same age, showed alot of potential, seemed to decline a bit, both have upside etc, only one guy pitches and one plays OF.
