Combined with tight end Dustin Keller and the emerging Shonn Greene along with the best line in football, New York has the makings of a powerhouse offense that can bludgeon you to death or make the quick kill. We’re not even mentioning the recovering Leon Washington, once by far the team’s most explosive player. LaDainian Tomlinson is sort of a side show, but he’s at least a competent third-down back if Washington is traded or continues to refuse to sign his contract tender.
I’m with Mike. I don’t know the first thing about Santonio Holmes as a person, so I don’t want to waste too much time weighing in on his character issues. I know he’s been accused of some pretty terrible things that I don’t aim to excuse him for, and I know he’s guilty of some pretty hilarious things that I’ll certainly make jokes about in the future.
I know Santonio Holmes is really good at football, though, and if Rex Ryan thinks he can rein him in, then good luck to Rex, and good news for the Jets. It seems like a no-brainer to give up a fifth round pick for a great receiver, even if he’s about to miss the first four games of the season.
Here’s me and Brian Bassett talking about the deal:
I’m a steelers fan, and I pretty much want to stick my head in an oven. In the grand scheme of things I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, for us, we probably weren’t going to resign him after this season anyway just because of financial restraints, but I also can’t think of one logical reason to not at least wait till the draft to move him. From the sounds of it they quite literally just took the first offer from the first front office they talked too and if they couldn’t trade him last night they were going to straight up release him this morning. Which sounds incredibly dumb to me since they could have just let him walk after the season and received higher compensation.
Also, there’s been mumblings of other things from people on steelers blogs who are closer to the team, but as far as I know he was never a character guy problem or anything. He was just a major idiot in that he failed a drug test last year, which put him on the NFL prohibition drug test thingy I can’t remember the actual name, so he knew he was going to be tested regularly and proceeded to fail 3 more times, which is just really stupid. So he doesn’t really have red flags like some players, other than just being kind of stupid and I really don’t expect for him to be a problem with the Jets. Most of the other things he’s been accused seem to be more products of him being kind of dumb and getting in bad situations, but not actually doing anything wrong other than that. He mostly seems like a good guy, with a slight maturity/decision making problem.
Yeah the “pretty terrible things” I referred to above weren’t the drug-test failures but his domestic-violence arrest, though the charges were eventually dropped.
Funny you should say that you hate it as a Steelers fan, though. I made a joke on Twitter about the Holmes pickup today and someone told me that I shouldn’t get excited about him simply because the Steelers are a good organization, and it means something if they give up on a player of his caliber.
But I’m with you. I find it hard to see how 12 games of worth of Holmes next season won’t be better than a 5th round pick. The Jets are going to need to pass a lot more to keep everyone happy and getting the ball, but the Sanchize is up to it.
yeah i figured those were what you mean, what I meant is that most of them seemed to turn out to be more him just putting himself in dumb situations, not him actually doing anything terrible.
And yeah meh, the steelers are definitely a good organization but I think the person who said that is probably overestimating them. They’re mostly a good organization because they completely avoid any type of gamble, and never really go into “win-now” mode, and are willing to put off competing for 1-2 years to do it “their” way, probably because the rooneys give their coaches/gms enough job security for their to not really be any worry. Them giving up on Holmes isn’t really a red flag, it’s more like they didn’t have him as part of their long-term plan to begin with, they probably can’t afford to resign him with Woodley’s extension coming up anyway, and just weren’t concerned enough with winning this year to keep him around after failing multiple drug tests.
Please, the Steelers may have a great owner, but as an organization they put up with boneheads like Worthlessburger or goons like Hines Ward all the time. If they’re foolish enough to give up on Holmes, far be it for me as a Jets fan to argue with them.
Well really if it had just been the criminal accusations they probably wouldn’t have cared. The thing with Holmes is that he’s already tested positive 4 times, 3 times coming after he knew he was being tested regularly because of his first test positive, all in the last year I believe, that’s just kind of dumb. And a lot more likely to be a problem in the future since if he tests positive again he’s looking at an 8+ game suspension, and considering he tested positive three times knowing the 4 game suspension was coming, I imagine the steelers figured there was a good chance it will happen again. And since they had no intentions on reupping him anyway whats the point of keeping him around?
