Bud Selig finally recognized for his tireless efforts to protect world from PEDs

Commissioner Bud Selig was named the first recipient of Taylor’s Award, presented by the Taylor Hooton Foundation to an individual who has made a major impact on efforts to educate and protect American youth from the dangers of using performance-enhancing drugs. …

“I’m extremely proud to present the first Taylor’s Award to Commissioner Bud Selig,” said Don Hooton, Taylor’s father, who serves as president of the Hooton Foundation, said at a media conference after the joint session.

I was being sarcastic,” Hooton later added.

(Ed. Note: Just to clarify, Hooton didn’t actually say that last part. That part’s the joke/Norm MacDonald reference.)

  1. I was going to ask if Selig is the worst sports commissioner ever? No salary cap, PED’s exploding, the necrosis of many franchises, refusal to support the Hispanic players by removing the All-star game from Phoenix etc.

BTW, will it still be called an “all-star” game when no Hispanic player goes to Arizona?

    • I don’t really know the ins and outs or history of commissioning well enough to judge. And baseball, under Selig, has enjoyed enormous financial success. A lot of that might be due to the league’s profitable online presence, but it’s hard to outright kill Selig when the game is doing great.

The Arizona situation is tricky. I hope players boycott the game, but I can see where the league would hesitate to roll back on a previously arranged agreement over a political stance, however legit. It would’ve been cool if the Mets wore the “Los Mets” jerseys in solidarity, though.
