Jerry Manuel is suffocating from the silence above him.
The embattled Mets manager admitted yesterday that he would “love to know” if the organization plans to bring him back next season, but he also isn’t about to seek out GM Omar Minaya or Jeff Wilpon for an answer.
What’s funny about this is that on the Mets’ radio broadcast last night, Howie Rose and Wayne Hagin anticipated exactly that type of gravitas from the Post in response to Manuel’s comment.
But Manuel, they explained, said what he said after having been asked the same question by the same reporter several different ways. Rose said Manuel essentially relented and said, “yeah, sure, I’d love to know,” when asked if he would prefer to know his job status for next season. Because who wouldn’t?
The writing’s on the wall for Manuel, and from a fan’s perspective, you know, fine. He bunts too often and mismanages the bullpen.
Puma’s doing his job obviously, trying to come up with some way to sell papers on the first night of what looks to be a long September for the Mets. But this is a nothing thing. Hagin and Rose dismissed Manuel’s comment as a throwaway line.
Not that it really matters one way or the other, I guess.
I agree its time for a new general and that Manuel makes some odd decisions… but to say he bunts too often is not something I agree with. with nobody out, runners on 1st, 2nd, or both, in a close game, you bunt them over. Not with hitters 3-5 or #8 hitter, but generally that is a rule. It seems like there are some people that DO NOT believe in sacrificing bunting somebody other than the Pitcher.
generally that is a rule
…according to whom and based on what? and Jerry does EXACTLY what your “rule” says not to do: he bunts with his best hitters up. And even in a close game, if Reyes leads off in the 6th or 7th and gets a single, it’s a TERRIBLE idea to give away an out to get him to second base, especially when he is a threat to steal. Jerry makes this terrible decision quite often.
I don’t recall the exact wording or who said it (off to a great start, right?) but there was a manager who said something to the effect of: if you play for one run, that’s exactly how many you’re going to get.
I think the problem is Jerry will be fired for reasons other than he “bunts to often” and “mismanages the bullpen”, and so we’ll end up with a Jerry clone because the organization thinks we need new blood to light a fire and not new blood who can use common sense.
Yeah I’m just hoping they’ll go looking for someone to light a fire and stumble upon a guy with the torch of wisdom, or something.
Berbs what do you mean by ‘best hitters’ have you seen the lineup they are trotting out tonight?! But seriously, from a pure coaching standpoint, you will give away an out to give your team a better chance of scoring a run… Reyes doesnt steal 100% of his bases. you give your team a better chance of scoring runs if they can do it with the least amount of hits possible.
