Flood: Posey or Heyward?

Lots of SNY.tv love today. Patrick presents a pretty eye-opening chart, and I’ll add this: Only 15 guys have ever posted an OPS of .800 or better while qualifying for the batting title at age 20 or younger. 10 of them are in the Hall of Fame. The others are Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Jason Heyward, Tony Conigliario — a tragic case, beaned in the eye at 22 and never the same afterwards — and Vada Pinson, a very good player who peaked a bit early and likely missed the Hall of Fame by a couple hundred hits.

  1. No doubt that the player has to be good to do this, as shown by the quality of the list, I’d have to argue though that the overall quantity of players who have done it being so low, would likely be more due to the rare oppurtunities for 20 year olds to get that many ABs, even if they are star prospects. Theres probably countless more players who were talented enough at the age of 20 that they could have done this, but instead may have still been in college or the minors having just not yet had a chance.
