J.P. Ricciardi saying stuff

Some excerpts:

TB: One of things the last administration was criticized for — rightfully or wrongfully — was rushing prospects through the system a bit. Is there anything being done to change that? Is that something you’re conscious of?

JR: Well in defense of the last administration, sometimes you end up pushing players to the big leagues out of necessity. It’s prevalent in the game, it’s not just that one club does it and one club doesn’t. I think sometimes the guys who have the talent get pushed along. Obviously we would not like to do that because you’d like to have guys take incremental steps and get to the point that they’re playing when they’re ready, and you’d like to have guys behind them coming. But it doesn’t always work out that way. We’ll try to do that, but I can’t guarantee you it will definitely happen.

TB: With drafting, do you have plans to stick to the slotting system or is that something you hope to be a little more flexible with?

JR: Well, I think you’d have to ask Sandy [Alderson] that one. Now that I’m not the GM, I don’t mind going overslot, but it’s not my call. But I think we’ll try to get the best players available. We know what our goal is here; our goal is to win, and ultimately you’re going to win with the best players.

It’s important, you know

Joe Janish at Mets Today passes along a Peter, Paul and Mary performance in honor of Carlos Beltran’s move to right field. I knew the song, but only from the following ad. My friends and I thought this was hilarious when we were of Little League age. Anyone remember on which early-90s VHS tape this commercial was embedded in before the main feature? I do, but I’m quizzing you.

Taco in a Helmet of the Week

If you’re unfamiliar, Taco In a Helmet is Digital Domain Park’s most legendary concession — and that’s saying something, because this place has a Tiki bar, funnel cake, decent-looking pizza and char-grilled hot dogs, hamburgers and pretzels. I’ll probably sample most of those things in the coming weeks, but only Taco In a Helmet merits a TedQuarters video exclusive.

If I seem distracted during the open, it’s because some friendly fellows just off camera were alternately chanting “TED! TED! TED!” and “TACO! TACO! TACO!” So that was awesome. Other distractions include: forthcoming Taco In a Helmet.

I just realized it’s the weekend and I haven’t had any notable sandwiches, but I’ll try to eat something impressive by tomorrow for Sandwich of the Week. I’ve got my eye on a bit of a road trip for a decent Cuban because I don’t think anyone’s that eager to read my write-up of the Captain Morgan Caribbean Conga-Line Chicken Sandwich from T.G.I. Friday’s. If you don’t see it here by tomorrow night, just wait longer.
