Yikes

I just got a call from someone at the Mets taking issue with my frequent criticism of the team for giving Cory Sullivan guaranteed Major League money, as that was apparently not the case. I was, to be honest, putting blind faith in the excellent Cot’s MLB Contracts site.

Sullivan’s was a split contract, meaning he was paid a different rate for time with the Minor League club, and the $600,000 rate was prorated for time spent on the big-league roster.

My bad.

Presumably, the call had something to do with my admittedly speculative column on Chris Coste yesterday, and I assume means Coste did, as Sam suggested in the comments section, receive a split contract.

So a mea culpa: The Mets will not be spending much money on Chris Coste if he’s not on the 25-man Major League roster. But I’ll maintain that they could have waited for the non-tender and Rule 5 pictures to clear up before committing a 40-man roster spot with Coste, and that they probably should be searching for catchers with more upside.

And maybe they are.

Anyway, it’s good to know someone’s reading.

  1. Ted, with all these way younger catchers why would it be impossible for Omar to make a trade to a lower market team and pick up a younger, better defensive catcher. Look Thole is probably a year away, and Santos would make for a great back up. So, why as Mets fans, can’t we have a guy like Doumit, Snyder, or some other Catcher with upside in catching, We went from having the greatest offensive Catcher to Omar’s idea of bringing in another nothing catcher and I thought Schneider was great for a non power guy, but was better at teaching younger catchers.

  2. No, Henry Blanco, absolutely not to Molina, and to get a hand me down player from the phillies of all teams. Ted, that is not the way it works, we give the phillies and braves the hand me downs not the other way around.

Pitching wise, give me Halladay, Lackey, take a chance on Sheets and Lowry the Mets need at least three of these four, just in case they don’t pan out. Coudn’t they put Oliver Perez on that new Puerto rican or Dominican team they have? Another year of head case would be awful.

I think between Castillo and Hudson there is really no difference. It becomes addition by subtraction. So in one way your getting better Defense, but going so so on Offense, which I think Luis definitely won out on last season. keep Murphy at first, if Ike Davis is the next Keith Hernandez/ John Olerud than so be it, then move Murphy to second, which won’t happen until Omar is gone and if he doesn’t wake up soon will be in April.

  3. Correction, Head Case is probably a better name for Pelfrey, who I think will be fine. Mr. Meltdown is a better name for Perez.

  4. If there is a trade for Roy Halladay involving a number of players on the Mets 40 man roster that is in the works before the Rule V draft, placing Chris Coste on the 40 man roster now does not make a difference. With Coste, there is only 38 players on the 40 man roster now.

The (reported) signings of Coste and Blanco suggest that Santos (and others) will be elsewhere soon.
