Beltran situation upgraded to completely baffling

Carlos Beltran released a statement tonight. It went like this, according to Matt at MetsBlog:

“I am totally surprised by the reaction to my recent knee surgery.  Any accusations that I ignored or defied the team’s wishes are simply false.  I also spoke to Omar Minaya about the surgery on Tuesday.  He did not ask me to wait, or to get another doctor’s opinion.  He just wished me well. No one from team raised any issue until Wednesday, after I was already in surgery.  I do not know what else I could have done. The most important thing here is that the surgery was a total success and I expect to be back on the field playing the game I love sooner rather than later.”

So Beltran called Omar on Tuesday, and Omar wished him well in surgery? Joel Sherman reports the same thing. Then why was John Ricco on the conference call today acting like the Mets had no idea he was going under the knife?

I’m done even trying to figure this one out. I’m guessing the root of the problem is a massive breakdown in communication once again.

  1. When a come across a WTF situation like this, where it’s a he said she said type deal, I tend to look at motive of each side, to see who has more motive to be lying.

I am having trouble with a motive from the mets side. I can’t think of any reason they’d chose to create such a circus, and go through all this just to make up a story? What is the benefit for them? I can’t think of any good reason.

Beltran I could see having motive as the mets put it out there that he didn’t cooperate, and filing something with the MLB, you could see Boras/beltran going into denial mode after the fact.

    • Klapisch suggested the only motive I can think of, and it’s dark – that the prognosis on Beltran’s knees, and therefore his career, might be beginning to seem bleak, and so they seized on this as a way to potentially get out of the contract if this surgery doesn’t get him back in shape. I don’t really believe that, as it’s just so coldly calculating, but it’s hard to understand WTF they thought they might gain from this circus, otherwise.

      • That is possible but I think the likelyhood of the mets being able to void his deal because of this is slim to none, and the mets would know this.

  2. They gain nothing from the circus. They’ve proven that they create self destructive situations without knowing they’re making things worse. This probably goes back to Jeff acting out without thinking. Omar wasn’t there because Jeff is mad that Omar gave his approval and didn’t tell the team. The surgery was the right move and Omar & Beltran were trying to get him back on the field quick. Wilpon didn’t want him disabled to start the year (ticket sales) and there’s the conflict. It’s a shame…
