Poll: Do you listen to podcasts?

I’m considering starting up a podcast, so I’m curious:

On second thought, some of the choices there might skew the results a little, so let me be more specific.

I’m considering starting up a podcast, unaffiliated with SNY (but certain to be shamelessly linked from this blog) with my former college roommate Ted Burke, one of the most entertaining people I know, and with whom I co-hosted a campus TV show in college.

We’d talk about sports some, for sure, but I’m hoping to pull off something more akin to a variety show format: some combination of scripted jokes and sketches, debate, and interviews.

  1. I LOVE podcasts. I rarely ever listen to music anymore on my ipod now that I have a bunch of podcasts. I only subscribe to a few, but the ones I listen to are in order:
    1. BS Report with bill simmons
    2. Adam Carolla podcast
    3. Stuff you should know (howstuffworks.com)
    4. Around the Horn
    5. PTI
    6. NYBD (w/ mike silva) less often and usually only when Howard Megdal is on.

I find podcasts are the best things to listen to in the gym as you sorta have to focus on them and you don’t think as much about how much working out can sometimes suck.

  2. Almost definitely – I like listening to podcasts while I’m washing dishes (b/c I pile them up so high that it takes me a half hour when I run out and half to clean them) and while I’m walking to and from the train station. I generally listen to The BS Report, but Simmons’ ego has gotten so big it’s sometimes hard to listen to. So, basically, I think you should do the same kinda podcast he does (intermix sports with pop culture/movies/tv/etc.), but don’t have an ego about it. You’re a Mets fan, so that shouldn’t be too tough.

  3. I won’t listen. I am sorry as I can be that I ever listened to a Bill Simmons podcast – only about 20 minutes in, but our relationship is just not the same any more. His voice didn’t fit what I had in my head, at all. Of course, you’re on tv occasionally I think, so this probably wouldn’t apply to you.

And Simmons is funny as all hell in his writing, but him sitting around with another guy trying to be funny — torture. I’m sure it has its entertaining moments, it seems to be very popular, but generally guys sitting around trying to be funny is a bad bet for getting any actual funny.

  4. Sunil,

Thank you for bringing up. I too miss the hilarious banter between Ted and that other guy who hosts the show. I don’t know what I’d do with myself if they didn’t have a 2010 preview show in the near future.

    • I was actually only concerned fan of NYMetscast.com. Mike is a legit person who is wondering whether the show is coming back…..

And Mike – good news! Ted and I plan to do a show this weekend. Gives you something to look forward to since it’s Friday and there’s never anything to look forward to on a Friday…

  5. Ted, I’d definitely listen. Definitely. A great sports podcast is like good sports radio without the commercials.

Speaking of which, has anyone else noticed that Finally Fast changed their name to Fast At Last?

And Anit, it’s funny, I had the same reaction at first. Once you get used to it tho, those Simmons podcasts are pure gold . . .
