Items of note

Things got a bit curmudgeonly on the Internet yesterday, and I failed to mention the awesome news: Jose Reyes is back in Mets camp.

Jerry Manuel now says Reyes will likely bat leadoff, meaning today’s lineup gives us a reasonable framework for what to expect this year. It is:

Angel Pagan
Luis Castillo
David Wright
Jason Bay
Daniel Murphy
Jeff Francoeur
Alex Cora
Rod Barajas
Johan Santana

I imagine that’s the Opening Day lineup if Reyes is still out. If Reyes is back, sub him in for Cora and flip-flop him and Pagan in the leadoff and seventh spots in the order. Murphy, as I guessed, hits in front of Francoeur to break up the right-handers.

OK, this guy? He should be thankful he has a Taco Bell that can pull off that substitution, even if it means he has to pay a few extra cents. Last night it took my area Taco Bell 14 minutes (!) to prepare a Volcano Taco and a Baja Beef Gordita at the drive-thru, and then the Volcano Taco — and this has now happened multiple times at this Taco Bell location — came in a regular crunchy Taco shell, not the red Volcano shell.

  1. Ted, I’ve been a Murphy fan, but I am beginning to lose faith. I would love to know your thoughts on Chris Carter. I have not seen enough of him to make a fair evaluation, but I have been impressed by his swing from the little I have seen. Darn shame we didn’t get to see him last September, thanks to that Pee Wee Herman look a like GM of the Yankees.

    • I think Carter’s at least as good a fit for the 25th spot on the roster as Jacobs or Catalanotto, for sure. But I, too, haven’t seen enough of him to really judge. From a personal standpoint, I’m really hoping he makes the team because I understand he’s an interesting dude.

I’m not giving up the faith in Murphy yet, though. He’s obviously tinkering this Spring, and he’s still young. I’ll give it a few months of season, at least.

  2. This guy dares to question the complex and all-encompasing taco bell pricing structure? I disallow this guy’s entire argument based on the fact that he ordered a salad from taco bell.

And if they don’t give you a volcano taco shell than it’s just a slightly spicy taco. THAT would justify a call to a manager, not making a change to an order and being upset about a maximum 50 cent bump for a custom order.

  3. I dont see a problem with the Taco bell pricing structure. If you go to a restaurant of any kind, order a meal and say, hold the “insert any item’ from your meal, do you expect to get a credit for the tomoatoes or cheese you didnt eat?

    • Exactly! And if the manager had said anything to that effect this guy would have flipped out that Taco Bell is horrible, blah blah blah. Someone needs to learn that beans are good.

  4. Murphy’s swing seems different this year, it’s not just the stance. The top hand is flying off way too early. He used to keep 2 hands on his bat throughout the whole swing. Hope he gets it sorted out. He has one extra base hit all spring. He can’t afford to slump early in the season. If he’s hitting .240-.250 in mid-May you can bet people will be clamoring for Ike.
