Good to know

Omar Minaya on Jenrry Mejia, per SNY:

When you bring up a young kid, it’s more than just his performance. You Think of long-term picture. All things come into play. We did it will Joe Smith and Parnell. But you have to look into a lot of factors.

You have to look at all things. Look at the individual. Each guy has a different personality.

Nice to hear the term “long-term picture” thrown around.

  1. The scariest thing to me was, according to Metsblog, he said Jerry will pick the roster. Is that true? That’s not common, right?

How many franchises would let any manager, let alone a sub-50-IQ dope like Jerry determine the fate of the organization’s best pitching prospect?

      • Thanks for the clarification. I will breathe slightly easier now.

Although I think that line about personality means Mejia is making the team.

      • Actually his bringing up Parnell and Smith, who have both not done very well after being rushed through the organization seems to imply that they’ve learned their lessons and Mejia will learn in the minors for a while.

      • I don’t think Parnell was rushed at all, he was 24 and a borderline non prospect. With Smith it depends, since he was drafted with the idea he’d be a bullpen arm fast there was never any consideration of him being a starter, where as I would hope with Jenrry their intentions are on him being a starter.

  2. Shamik, I thought (or hoped) that he was implying that Parnell and Smith were different because they lacked Mejia’s upside. To paraphrase — “We did it with Parnell and Smith, you know, but you gotta, you know, look at a lot of, of, of factors, uh, uh, everybody is uh, uh, different, uh, you know what I’m talking about.”
