Jonathan Mayo from MLB.com doesn’t expect the Mets to draft above slot. As he points out, that doesn’t make a massive difference when they’ve got the seventh pick overall, but it’s not great news to any Mets fan frustrated with the team’s recent drafting history.
If they didn’t think there was anyone worthy of going over slot for this one year, I’d be fine with it.
But it’s the fact there seems to be an organizational philosophy against going over slot, except in very rare circumstances. Whether that’s to appease Bud or whatever, it really hurts the team.
And it’s not just with first-rounders. The team should really take more chances with mid-round picks who fall b/c of signability (like Max Stassi last year).
