Would you root for Brett Myers?

The Mets have been vaguely linked to Brett Myers in trade rumors.

I’m curious how strong the dedication is to the so-called laundry, so I figured I’d run a poll. First, the information:

Brett Myers is a decent but unspectacular pitcher having a nice season. He tends to go deep in games and appears to be benefiting from his departure from Philadelphia’s obscene home-run environment. He would represent an upgrade to the Mets’ pitching staff.

In 2006, Brett Myers was arrested for punching his wife in the face on a street corner in Boston in front of multiple witnesses. One said:

“He was dragging her by the hair and slapping her across the face. She was yelling, ‘I’m not going to let you do this to me anymore’ …  She’s a real small girl. It was awful.”

Charges were later dropped at Myers’ wife’s behest.

In 2007, Myers had to be restrained by teammates during a profanity-laced tirade aimed at a Phillies’ beat reporter.

By “root for” in the poll below, I don’t mean necessarily by his player-tee or anything like that. I mean buy tickets to games he’s pitching, cheer when he gets a big strike three, applaud when he walks off the mound after a nice start — nothing outrageous, just how you would treat any other pitcher on your favorite team.

  1. I think this comes down to rooting for the uniform, not the player.

Most fans will root for a guy, by default because he plays for thier team. Personally, I’d rather the Mets just get a different pitcher, but if he were aquired, I’d root for him, since I’d be rooting for the Mets pretty much no matter what.

  2. Great question.

I reluctantly voted yes. I wouldn’t want the Mets to acquire him, but if they did, I would hope he did well for a few months, got let go in the offseason and was hit by a bus.

But I really hope they don’t do it. It sounds bad, but if I’m really honest with myself, he’s just not good enough to overlook the fact that he’s an awful, awful human being.

  3. I don’t think Jeff or Fred Wilpon would allow Myers on their team. As much as most of us complain about the way they run this team, I don’t believe they want this type of person playing for the Mets. For reference, see: Coleman, Vince or Saberhagen, Bret – circa 1992-1993 Mets. I never really liked Gary Sheffield or Rickey Henderson, but was happy to root for them when they joined the Mets. They were eccentric personalities to be sure, but at least there was never a documented case of domestic violence against either. Myers, on the other hand, I cannot root for, regardless of uniform. I just cannot justify it morally for my part.

    • I certainly respect that opinion, but don’t several members of the 1986 Mets (including the guy some are clamoring to be the next manager) have documented cases of domestic violence on their resume?

Myers’ case seems to be a particularly brutal and brazen form, but…

      • Good point. But I’m not neccessarily one of those who think that Backman will ever get a chance to manage the Mets. If Manuel is fired, even at seasons end, I think their top choices are 1-Bob Melvin, 2-Bobby Valentine (if he doesn’t take Cubs Job), 3-Joe Tore (assuming LA doesn’t re-sign him), 4-Ken Oberkfell (who has more minor league experience than Backman). I think the Wilpon’s want someone with name recognition and/or a ML track record to manage the team anyway, so I doubt Backman gets that chance.

  4. No question – I’d rather see them lose than win with a douche like Myers. Beating the crap out of your wife like that is inexcusable.

  5. I don’t care what kind of person you are… just what kind of player. If he wins, fans will root for him.

This sounds like nothing more than a personal attack against a guy with a troubled past.

  6. If you are an advocate of Wally Backman managing the Mets let alone being in the organization again, I would hope you think twice before you haphazardly click a “no”.

Do I approve of what Myers did, absolutely not. But you can’t caveat how you approach a player based on the history of his team.

    • This is true, I’m sure almost all of these people detesting Myers on here would be the first in line celebrating if Wally Backman was hired as manager.

  7. I wouldn’t root against him if he was in a Mets uniform, but I wouldn’t root for that jerk either. I definitely wouldn’t be happy if the Mets got him.

    • I can’t speak for anyone else, and I don’t really know the details of what happened with Backman, but if it’s similar, I wouldn’t want to see him in a Mets uniform (again) either.

      • Here read this: Just a preview….

“the domestic violence incident of Oct. 7, 2001. On that night, according to the Prineville police incident report, Backman threatened to kill his wife, broke down the door to his house and then used a baseball bat to assault one of the other terrified women inside, Sherrie Rhoden, who was left with a bloody gash on her face.

It didnt sound all that different but of course Mets fans will have a different view of a 1986 hero than they would a former Philly.

  8. I would cheer, but not for him, for the team if that makes any sense. If I’m at a game and where up by a bunch and some adds on, I’ll cheer for the guy, not really for the team since it makes little difference for the team. If I’m at a game and they walk it off, I don’t care who hit it, I’m cheering for the team.

  9. So long as I can keep the thought of him hitting his wife out of my head, the “yes.”

Look, I have the same “lack of respect” and “anger” for someone that would hit a woman as everyone else here. I have a sister, a mom and lots of aunts, female cousins and female friends.

But if his wife can forgive him, then I guess so can I.
