I really like it when Theo Epstein does this

I know the guy’s not perfect, and obviously the Red Sox do play in a market that’s different from the Mets’. But it’s cool when Theo Epstein explains things patiently and in clear terms like this instead of just being all, “calm down you idiots, we traded a guy who can’t get the ball over the plate for a prospect with obscene peripherals.” To me, this is a deal you make if you’re in first, a game out, seven games out, whatever.

  1. I mean reading things like this make me envious of those who have a GM like Epstein. I mean he sees the big picture & also has a grip on reality. Yes he works in a different market…but his quotes lead you to believe that he realizes the people who are reading his quotes are not oblivious, disillusion baseball fans.

When I hear Manuel say the Mets still have a run in them or someone from the organization tells me Ollie has been working hard and improving, I can’t help but wonder if they realize they’re treating their fan base like a bunch of idiots. It’s annoying and frustrating. Especially when you read quotes like this from Epstein who clearly just “gets it.” Instead of dodging Oliver Perez like the very wealthy elephant in the room, I’d rather management call a spade a spade…and still be tactful about it. It can be done. This serves as evidence.

  2. Epstein is the best. It’s criminal how underappreciated he is in Boston, a big market that’s actually more insane about baseball than NY.

    Omar, are you listening?
