On Carlos Gonzalez’s home/road splits

Fascinating read from an Athletics Nation fanpost asserting that Gonzalez could be benefiting at home — and struggling on the road — because of the difference in how fastballs (not breaking pitches) move at altitude. Home/road splits have been pretty clearly amplified at Coors for a long time now and it’s hard to buy that it’s all about the hitter-friendly environment; something else is happening there and this seems like at least a very good step toward an explanation. Huge hat tip to Andrew Martin from Purple Row.

    • Yup, that’s how I made my way to this article. He didn’t mention anything about how pitches break differently, so I tweeted something at Posnanski about having heard that, and Andrew pointed me towards this.

Rockies fan and former roommate Ted Burke and I spent a whole, whole lot of time talking about the Rockies and their splits, among other issues back in college. It’s a weird thing, and something that can’t fully be explained away by “oh he plays in a hitter’s park” — no way Gonzalez is that bad if he’s playing at Citi Field or whatever.

It is, to say the least, a unique situation for a variety of reasons.
