  1. Charlie Samuels got married at the church I used to attend in the 80s. His ushers were Lee Mazzili, Wally Backman, and Dwight Gooden. Got an autograph from Wally, but REALLY wanted one from Dwight. His poster was on my wall. As Dwight got to his limo to leave, I asked him to sign a piece of paper I had. “Not now, kid.” he said. Then he got in his car and drove away. I stood there for a couple of moments confused. I thought…”Not now? Is he coming back?”

  2. Definitely weird. Theory I heard over in the Metsblog comment section (so total conjecture) is that perhaps he is a Rubin source and the Rubin/Backman nonsense involved him somehow.

New sheriff in town won’t tolerate leaks in the chain of command, even ones who have been here forever.

Total throw it against the wall stuff but its the only one that isn’t impossible to believe.

    • That one would be tough to believe but it could be. The only thing that wouldnt make sense is that the decison makers in picking a manager would be high level execs, why would they discuss any of this with an equipment manager?

      • The more I thought about it the less it made sense.

My thought was it was a clubhouse rumor, which the equip manager would definitely hear about. But then it wouldn’t be a guarded-on-high secret the likes of which Rubin described.

But you’re right, this guy wasn’t privy to high level meetings. And apparently this is a week old so it couldn’t be related.

        Oh well. It didn’t stick.

  3. Update on Metsblog says this happend last wednesday, before Alderson was even hired. SO something must have happened as it would appear that this is not just some Alderson house cleaning.

  4. Actually, Samuels was fired a couple years ago, but there was a glitch in payroll, so he kept getting his checks. Alderson fixed the glitch. I’m just a little surprised they didn’t wait ’til Friday.

  5. This hits me pretty hard, actually. For almost my entire life, my brother, father, and I have referred to him as “cousin Charlie.” Fairly certain we’re not related, but still. I hope it’s not anything I did.
