Toby Hyde on Dillon Gee
Toby’s not on board. He makes some good points.
Rare and unpublished Babe Ruth photos
Babe Ruth is so damn awesome. I’m off to Yankee Stadium, as it were.
Diddy ranked second highest-earning hip-hop artist
I linked this just because I’m wondering: Do we still really consider Puff Daddy a musician at this point? The Wikipedia tells me he’s apparently got a new album coming out this year, but when I think of Sean Combs I really don’t associate him with music at all. I guess I sort of think of his music-related projects, but really I think rich-guy-at-large, like an eccentric millionaire type who does all sorts of millionaire things. I heard he was awesome in Get Him to the Greek, incidentally.
Calcaterra: Contract disqualification a P.R. move
He’s a lawyer, so he’d know better than me. I’ve never actually heard of a player’s contract being disqualified — at least not in those terms — before so I figured it was John Ricco pulling out some little-known MLB contract stuff he knew about from his time in the league office, but it does sound a bit too good to be true. Either way, obviously the union’s going to fight the hell out of it.
Excellent story, delicious byline
Other than the fact that Zoltan Mesko is on the Patriots, everything about this Wall Street Journal piece by John U. Bacon is cool. Hat tip to Tom Boorstein.
Sadaharu Oh’s mother dies at 108
108 years old! There’s probably a K-Rod joke to be made in there somewhere but I’m not gonna be the guy to make it. Also, Sadaharu Oh provided an oddly dispassionate quote in the linked story: “I’m sure she had various ups and downs in a long, long life.”
Mariano Rivera awesome
Sadly, the online version of this story doesn’t have the same picture as the print one: Nick Swisher, mid-cannonball.
UPDATE: James K points out that the cannonball in question comes at the 1:08 mark in the video. Questionable form but solid splash.
How to make an In-N-Out Burger
Outstanding and detailed research here. The big revelation: The chuck they use at In-N-Out Burger is 60% lean, 40% fat. That’s nuts. It’s hard to find anything fattier than 80/20 at the supermarket.
Minor League living
I imagine you’ll see Mike Ashmore’s exhaustive piece about the financial life of Minor Leaguers linked all over the Internet today because it’s outstanding.
