Apparently Carlos Beltran owns a restaurant

The Mets have been using their @NewYorkMets Twitter account to have players answer questions from fans, which is awesome. Carlos Beltran participated today, and this was the most interesting interaction:

My favorite restaurant is Sofrito on E 57th. I am a part owner. The food is delicious. RT @rhongolf Carlos , Where do you like to eat?

As a fan of Carlos Beltran and food, I was surprised I hadn’t heard of this. Turns out there was a N.Y. Post item about it in August, and to Beltran’s credit, the Post wrote that he bought a share of the restaurant because he liked it so much. So he’s probably not just shilling for the place he owns in the above Tweet.

Sofrito is on the extreme East side of Manhattan, between 1st ave. and Sutton. The good gets pretty good reviews on MenuPages. Anyone ever been?

  1. Carlos Beltran, a fan of full disclosure. I love it.

Carlos lost a few points with me for not simply saying to Joe Benigno yesterday, “F you, you ignorant, racist, insignificant fool” and then hanging up.

  2. Unless you can get it from your parents’ place, by all means go. Good tostones, and a ropa vieja that rivals La Isla’s Saturday special out in Hoboken.

If you do have a mom that can whip this stuff up, though, don’t tell her how much it cost. I got yelled at for spending the money.

    • My mom can make some awesome Italian food, but Puerto Rican cuisine is probably not her forte. She’s a good enough cook that she could probably pull it off, but if I’m eating at my parents’ house, I’m there for meatballs.

  3. I remember this place comming up a few times over the year from Beltran. I think he had a birthday diner there once a year or two ago, and I heard him mention it another time or two.

  4. A bunch of buddies and I went to this place for a night out a couple of months ago because we’d heard Beltran say it was his favorite place. We had to wait for 2 hours in the bar area, but once seated it was a fairly festive, overpriced but decent meal. We had a good time (the drinks helped) but not dying to return. We had really been looking forward to it.
The Cigar Bar afterwards (Club Macanudo) was the more memorable part of the night.
